It was the spring of 2024, we had just moved into our new home and hadn’t yet taken the time to ensure we were storm ready. Late one night I got a tornado warning alert. We quickly and chaotically packed our bags and rushed to the shelter with our 11 month old baby through the pouring rain. What we thought would be just a few minutes in the shelter, ended up being hours with multiple back to back tornado warnings. It was hours with spiders, scorpions, wet clothes, in the dark, no toilet, hungry, exhausted, anxious and scared. Then, when we thought it couldn’t get worse, the shelter began to leak and rain poured in.

It was a nightmare, but we were lucky. That night there were three tornadoes (an EF-2, EF-3, and EF-4) in surrounding towns, too close for comfort. Sadly people lost their lives and property from these tornadoes. Afterward, I made a promise to myself and my family: we would never be unprepared again.

We also realized something bigger, the need in Southern Oklahoma for storm preparedness. Not everyone is physically capable or even wants to worry about making sure their shelter is clean, safe, and ready at all times.
